About Us
The Centre for Tribal Studies (CTS) is constituted under Ordinance XX (Z) of the Ordinances of the University, as a multi-disciplinary centre, to facilitate studies on different tribes of India.
- To understand the term “Tribe” from an India-Centric perspective including the study of their social, cultural, linguistic, religious, economic, environmental diversity and commonalities.
- To study the role and contribution of tribal leaders in various eras of Indian history.
- To highlight the role and significance of tribal leaders in India’s struggle for freedom, and bring out to prominence the unsung heroes among them.
- To study and document various Lok traditions of India’s tribes including their indigenous/traditional knowledge and work to disseminate such information to the public in general and to academia and students in particular.
- To identify special problems and needs of Denotified and Nomadic tribes and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) with special reference to conservation, development and special health needs.
- To study the significance of the forest-tribe relationship with special reference to the stability of forest ecosystems and livelihood issues.
- To study contemporary issues relevant to the tribal communities which have a significant bearing on their present well-being and future progression in terms of overall developmental perspective..

Centre for Tribal Studies is committed to understanding the diversity of tribal practices, culture, language, religion, economy, commonalities and relationship with nature through an India-centric perspective. To ensure proper representation of the tribes in India, we seek collaborations with the faculty members belonging to scheduled tribes who are employed under Delhi University. For this purpose, we are collecting details of academic credentials and research done on the tribes by the faculty members belonging to Scheduled tribes as well as non-ST faculty members whose research revolves around the tribes in India.
